 Pigeons and Parrots

Order Columbiformes

Family Columbidae (Pigeons, Doves)

Mourning Dove
Rock Dove (Domestic/Feral Pigeon)
Two species of Dove reside on Furman's campus. One other species, the Eurasian Collared Dove, is a potential visitor, as it's range is rapidly expanding throughout much of the Southeast. Common Ground Doves occur in South Carolina, but most often near the coast. Pictured at right is a Mourning Dove (picture courtesy of Anne Baker).
Order Psittaciformes

Family Psittacidae (Parrots)

Budgerigar
Budgerigars, often called parakeets in pet stores, are favorite pets of Furman students. Several escapees/releases have been seen flying around Furman. The release of these birds is not an uncommon practice; in fact, stable breeding populations have been established in several locations around the southeast.
