Corvids have long been recognized as some of the world's smartest birds.
Recent experiments have shown that crows and ravens can engage in
problem-solving behavior and organize groups towards a common goal. One
researcher found that Ravens may even address one another by name, using
distinct vocal utterances to refer to individual birds. These experiments
are only documenting what many people have known for a long time. Native
American myths are riddled with representations of Crows in the role of
"Trickster," a character who often performs clever tricks to acquire food
or other items. These are the only three corvid species that occur on the
East Coast. |
