 Broad-winged Hawk
   Buteo platypterus

Status:

Uncommon:

S

Broad-winged Hawks can be found on campus throughout the summer months. These birds are known for migrating in massive congregations ("kettles") that sometimes number over 1000 birds. The photo at left was taken in the woods at Montague Village, where the majority of observations from the summer of 2008 were recorded. The nearby Blue Ridge Parkway is a reliable place to locate this species in summer and during the migration period.
