FURMAN EXTENDS LEAD IN FURMAN INTERCOLLEGIATE;

SATTERFIELD TAKES THREE-STROKE ADVANTAGE INTO FINAL DAY

GREENVILLE, South Carolina -- With one round left to play in the 32nd annual Furman Intercollegiate Golf Tournament, the Paladin team is in fine shape with a six stroke lead in the team standings and junior Kirk Satterfield atop the individual leaderboard.

Francis Marion paced the field on Saturday with a 285, but Furman's 290, combined with a first round 285, was enough to extend the Paladins lead to six entering the third and final round. The 12th-ranked Hokies of Virginia Tech are in second at 581, while Maryland holds third at 584 and VCU, the second-place team entering the day, is fourth.

For the second consecutive day the Paladins were led by junior Kirk Satterfield, who shot a second straight 69 and is at six-under, three strokes off the tournament record set by Jack Kay in 1986, when he was victorious in the Furman Intercollegiate. Satterfield enters the final round with four players locked in second place at three under par and Wofford's William McGirt, a first-round leader, in sixth at one under.

Furman was aided on the day by sophomore Matt Davidson, who followed up his first round 70 with a 75 and is in ninth at one-over par. Sophomore Noble Judy is one stroke back after rounds of 72 and 74, while Buddy Davis took three strokes off his first round 75 and is in 18th at 147. David Sligh, who carded a 74 on Friday, shot 77 in round two and is in 42nd individually with a 151 total.

The Furman B team followed its first round 304 with a 302 and is in 13th in the 21-team field, while Winthrop holds eighth with a two-day 597 total, Wofford sits in 15th with a 614 tally, and The Citadel is last at 661.

Furman's B team was led on the day by Todd King, who carded a 73 and is in 55th. Vance Embry is in 30th after shooting 76 on Saturday, while Tom Wyatt, a senior on the Paladin team, carded a 78 despite four birdies and a hole in one on the par three 16th. Senior Brian Scurlock fired a 75 and is in 55th, while freshman Hagan Jordan is at 164 and in 100th after an 83.

Round three of the Furman Intercollegiate begins Sunday morning at 7:30 a.m. at the 6,800 yard, par 72, Furman University Golf Course. Furman last won the Intercollegiate's team title in 1986. In 1990, Todd White was the last Paladin to win the individual title.
