BIO 440: Population Genetics and Evolution

Study Questions - Speciation II

Readings - chapter 16

1. What evidence suggests that vicariance was responsible for divergence of snapping shrimp (the ones with one huge claw)?

2. Distinguish between parapatric and peripatric speciation, and give an example of each. In which circumstance are you more likely to find a hybrid zone? Why?

3. Maynard-Smith suggested that sympatric speciation could occur if a sub-population became specialized on one host plant in the species range. Explain how this occurred in green lacewings, describing the genetic changes involved.

4. Speciation can occur as the result of continuous, cumulative genetic change or the result of specific incompatible alleles. Describe an example for each.

5. Describe how selection is creating reproductive isolation among 'ecotypes' of sticklebacks.

6. How can hybridization and 'diploidization' create a new species that is reproductively isolated from the parental species?
