MUSIC 43: Literature
of the Instrument (Voice)--2 credits

Library
Objective:
To survey song literature from the Elizabethan lute song through
the early 20th century, including the song literature of Italy, France,
the United States, Great Britain, Germany, and, if time permits, Scandinavia
and Russia.
Opera literature will be discussed and related to each student's
vocal category.
This will be accomplished in the following ways:
By listening to recordings of recognized artists, past and
present.
By reading assignments
Through independent analysis of selected vocal literature
through creating your own study guide.
Evaluation:
This will be accomplished in the following way.
First written and listening test
35%
Second written and listening test 35%
Final written and listening test
30%
Class participation is assumed. Unexcused absences drop the grade
one letter.
Tests will include listening identification from recorded examples on
the listening guides and written questions from the above independent study
guidelines and the assigned readings.
Readings will be found in the reference section of the library and
in texts on reserve for this class.

Meetings 1,2,3,4 -- German Romantic Lied
Meeting 5 -- First Test
Meetings 6,7,8,9 -- French Mélodie and Twentieth Century
aria and song
Meeting 10 -- Second Test
Meetings 11, 12, 13, 14 -- Italian baroque and nineteenth century
song, Elizabethan
and classic period English song, contemporary American and
British song and nationalistic vocal styles.
Final – As indicated in the class schedule for winter term.
