Excerpts from AElfric
Translated (loosely) from the Old English by Dr. Menzer

Excerpt from the Old English Preface to the First Series of Catholic Homilies

Now I ask and implore in God’s name that if someone wants to copy this book that he earnestly correct it according to the copytext, lest we be misled by careless writers.  He who writes falsely does much evil unless he corrects it, because he brings the true learning to false error; therefore everyone should set right that which he brought to error before, if he wants to be guiltless in God’s judgement.

Excerpt from the Old English Preface to Grammar

I ask now in God’s name that if someone wants to copy this book that he correct it well according to the copytext, because I cannot control it, though it brings someone to woe through false writers, and it is then his fault and not mine.  The bad writer does much evil if he does not correct his error.
