CLASS PROJECTS:

 

1.     Hand Stitch Sampler  which will contain examples of the following hand stitches:  slip stitch, slant hem stitch, catch stitch, stab stitch, basting stitch, the correct way to sew hook and eye, shank button, snaps

The Hand Stitch Sampler will be graded on:

                        Content:            45 % (Are all of the stitches contained in the sampler?)

                        Technique:            45 % (How accurate are the stitches?  Will they hold?)

                        Presentation:            10% (How neat and creative is the presentation?)

 2.     Machine Stitch Sampler  which will contain examples of the following machine stitches:  zig zag, 5/8  inch straight pressed seam allowance, curved seam, intersecting seam, french seam, welt seam, flat fell seam, correct examples of how to finish a dart, sew a casing, gather, clip and grade seam allowances; and a sample straight stitch from each machine in the shop

The Machine Stitch Sampler will be graded on:

                        Content:            45 % (Are all of the stitches contained in the sampler?)

                        Technique:            45 % (How accurate are the stitches?  Will they hold?)

                        Presentation:            10% (How neat and creative is the presentation?)

 3.     Sloper  Each student will complete a computer generated personal basic fitted garment pattern as a muslin mock-up.  In order to finish the project the student will be required to follow the manual and create an ACCURATE of personal measurements.  Each sloper must have a torso complete with sleeves on both sides.  Students must allow time to fit and rework the slopers so that the project has an accurate fit.

Slopers will be graded on:

                        Fit:            40% (Does the sloper fit properly?)

                        Technique            45% (How accurate are the seam allowances, darts, ease?)

                        Presentation            10% (Is it clean and neat?)

 4.     Costume/Production Lab  involves meaningful work on the current production during costume shop hours—at least 2 hours per week until dress rehearsals begin.  Students must keep a record of the hours worked per week to turn in the week after final dress.

Costume production lab grades are based on:

                        Attendance            33%

                        Technique            45% (How accurate are the seam allowances, darts, ease?)

                        Presentation            10% (Is it clean and neat? Does it fit properly?)

5.     Dye Project involves the creation of a batik.  The final effort may be either wearable or used as a wall hanging.

The Dye Project will be graded on:

                        Comprehension:            50% (How well does the student appear to understand the batik process?)

                        Technique:                        50% (Did the student follow the correct procedure for the resist? Did the student allow the wax to cool properly before subsequent dye baths?  Did the student follow the correct procedure for removing the resist?)           

 6.     Mask/Headdress will involve the completion of a Mask or Headdress.  Each student will be required to make a plaster cast of his/her face.      The masks will be made of either paper or buckram.

The Mask project will be graded on technique rather than design.

 7.     Shoe Project will involve the patterning and building of a pair of shoes. 

The shoe project will be graded on:

                        Comprehension:            50% (How well does the student appear to understand the process?)

            Technique:                      50% (Did the student use the correct lasts? Did the pattern work? Did the student use the glue properly? Did the shoe fit?)

FINAL PROJECT involves the completion of a personal garment to be presented in an organized program for the Furman Playhouse friends.
