Teaching Interests and Experience

During my time at Furman I have taught numerous courses, including elementary and intermediate language courses, Spanish civilization, literature surveys, a first-year seminar, and special advanced topics courses. The first-year seminar, entitled “Spain in the US Imagination,” examines the question of how Spain has historically been perceived and represented in US culture and society from the colonial period to the present day. My most recent special topics course, “Cuéntame cómo pasó: History, Change, and Memory in Contemporary Spain” (developed and taught with Dr. Lourdes Manyé), uses a popular Spanish TV series as a vehicle for examining Spain’s recent attempts to come to terms with its difficult past.
