Music 411, Fall 2018

Dr. Daniel Koppelman

Contemporary Styles and Techniques

This course will introduce the student to various representative masterworks from the 20th and 21st centuries, with an emphasis on developing an empirical and flexible analytical technique.

Class will meet Tuesday and Thursday from 8:30 to 9:45AM in the music department's seminar room. Class meetings will be part lecture, part seminar-style analytical discussion. Students are expected to come to class prepared to discuss assigned works. Please check the Music 411 Assignments web page for assignments:
http://eweb.furman.edu/~dkoppelman/fu/Theory/411/411Assignments.html

Grades will be based on quizzes (2 @ 15%, total of 30%), a 20-minute analytical presentation (25%), the final exam (25%) and class preparation/participation (20%). Quizzes and tests will contain both aural and written questions. The final examination will be given on the date and at the time specified by the Office of Academic Records.

Analytical presentations will be prepared in consultation with the instructor, and may be done by teams of 2 students. Presentations will be scheduled on a first-come first-served basis, with no more than one presentation per class meeting. Presentations done by teams should reflect equal preparation/participation by both team members; the instructor reserves the right to assign different grades to team members if this equality is not demonstrated.
