MUSIC 211C
Basic
Musicianship III: Keyboard
Fall 2012
Purpose: To
develop a functional knowledge of the piano and its role in the study of
music. The course has been
structured so as to help a student develop technical skills on the piano while
reinforcing theoretical concepts presented concurrently in other areas of the
Musicianship sequence. Emphasis
throughout the two-year sequence will be placed on playing scales, chords,
cadences, and other theoretical patterns in various keys, sight reading, improvising,
harmonizing and transposing at the piano, as well as performing selected
repertoire.
Text and supplies: Lancaster and
Renfrow. AlfredÕs Group Piano for
Adults: Book 2. Second edition. Alfred Publishing, 2008.
Students will be asked to supply their own
headphones.
Grading: Midterm
and Final Keyboard Examination, each 25%.
The remaining 50% will be determined by class participation and daily
skills quizzes, under the general format:
Technique

Reading
- 10%
Theoretical

Improvisation
- 10%

Teaching Fellows: Teaching
Fellows have been appointed for the Keyboard Harmony sequence and will be
available during several scheduled times throughout the week for assistance as
needed. The teaching fellowÕs schedule will be
posted at the beginning of each term.
Attendance: Attendance is important in that daily routines will be established to encourage consistent practice habits. For this reason, only one absence will be permitted in the class. Each subsequent absence will result in a full letter grade penalty to a maximum of five. The sixth absence will constitute a failing grade for the class.
