"Music for Computer and Live Performer"

This year's topic is "Music for Computer and Live Performer"

OBJECTIVES
In the first half of the course, students will learn their way around Ableton Live and Max for Live, working through a few chapters in the Manzo text.  We will also look at pieces utilizing a variety of strategies for live implementation of music technology.  The second half of the term will focus on the development of an individual creative project making use of some of the staggering array of possibilities studied in the first half.

DESCRIPTION
Class meetings will consist of lectures on fundamental concepts, demonstrations of hardware and software, analyzing existing pieces, discussion of reading assignments, student presentations of assignments and projects, and group responses/critiques to these presentations.

COURSE REQUIREMENTS
Course text:  Manzo, V.J. and Will Kuhn.  Interactive Composition.  New York: Oxford University Press, 2015.

- Four short hands-on assignments designed to develop technical skills with hardware and software presented in lectures/demonstrations.
- A Midterm Exam covering material presented in lecture and in the hands-on assignments.
- A final creative project: A live performance, approximately 3 - 5 minutes in length, utilizing resources available in the department's Multimedia Seminar Room.

Grades will be based on assignments (25%), Midterm (25%), attendance/participation (15%), and the final creative project (35%).

SEMINAR ROOM POLICIES

- Absolutely no food or drink at any time.
- Always enter your session in the Log Book.
- Normal the board when you're finished.
- Lock the 'cage' when you're finished with your session.
- Never leave the 'cage' unlocked when you're not in the room.
- You must present an ID card to obtain the key to the 'cage.'
- Weekly sign-up sheets will be posted the Friday before each week. If you are not present by ten minutes after the time of your sign-up, you forfeit your entire block of time.
