Judicial model
God has made laws for all humans
everyone has broken these laws
penalty for breaking law is death
Jesus did not deserve death sentence, rather he died to pay penalty for all
God shows he's satisfied with Jesus' payment; raises Jesus from death
those who accept Jesus' payment are treated as if they were not guilty although they are guilty; they are justified by faith.
Participationist Model
sin is a cosmic power, compels people to live in alienation from God
sin leads to death
Jesus' resurrection shows that sin can be overcome
a person can participate in Jesus' victory over sin and death
baptism leads to participation in death and resurrection
