FURMAN VOLLEYBALL DROPS THREE AT JEFFERSON CUP

HOOKS NAMED TO ALL-TOURNAMENT TEAM

GREENVILLE, South Carolina -- Furman's Lady Paladin volleyball team opened the 1999 season with three losses at the University of Virginia Jefferson Cup Tournament, but sophomore setter Laura Hooks (Kingsport, Tenn.) was named to the all-tournament team. The Lady Paladins lost 3-0 to Alabama in the season's first match, followed by a 3-0 loss to Virginia and a 3-1 decision to Ohio University.

Furman freshman Carrie Rowley (Lighthouse Point, Fla.) scored a team-high 37 kills over the three matches while fellow freshman Abby Simon (Simpsonville, S.C.) led the hitters with a .325 hitting percentage on 18 kills. Hooks topped the team in assists, with 111, and digs, with 26, while Rowley claimed second with 25 digs.

The Lady Paladins open the 1999 home season on Wednesday, Sept. 8, with a 7 p.m. match against conference foe Wofford. Admission is free to Furman home games.
