FURMAN DOWNS COLLEGE OF CHARLESTON IN FIVE
GREENVILLE, South Carolina -- After falling behind by two games to Furman, the College of Charleston came roaring back to even the match at 2-2, but the Lady Paladins scored a 15-9 win the fifth to take the 3-2 victory.
Furman won games one and two by scores of 15-8 and 15-6, while hitting .313 and .273. Eleven errors in games three and four, combined with great hitting by College of Charleston's Alyson VanCleave, sabatoged Furman's chance at a three-game match and forced a rally-scoring game five. In the final game the Lady Paladins hit .160 to C of C's .053 and improved to 14-11 overall and 10-4 in the Southern Conference, while Charleston dropped to 12-8 overall and 6-5 in the league.
Furman was led by freshman Abby Simon, who scored 19 kills and claimed 21 digs on the night, while Kelly King added 24 digs and Carrie Rowley contributed 23. In addition, Shawn Beckham, Laura Bush, Kelly King, and Rowley were all in double digits in the kills category.
The Cougars of Charleston were led by Stephanie Ballard's 20 kills, while VanCleave added 18 and Heather Bingham tallied 13. College of Charleston outblocked the Lady Paladins 10 to five.
The Lady Paladins are in action again on Sunday at 1 p.m., when they host The Citadel Bulldogs in Timmons Arena.
