FURMAN DEFEATS WEST VIRGINIA 3-2 FOR SEASON'S FIRST WIN

LAWRENCE, Kansas -- Furman's Lady Paladin volleyball team picked up its first win of the season Saturday in a hard-fought five game match against West Virginia in the Kansas Invitational.

The Lady Paladins topped the Mountaineers 15-13, 8-15, 15-11, 17-19, 17-15 to move to 1-7 on the year, recording a season-high 10 team blocks along the way. The Furman offense was led by Amber Montague, who recorded 22 kills, while Abby Simon added 17 and Shawn Beckham and Carrie Rowley each totaled 14. On the defensive side, sophomore Carrie Rowley totaled 27 digs, while Simon added 20 and Montague totaled 18. Setter Laura Hooks was credited with 58 assists, 13 digs, and a team-high six block assists.

WVU was led on the night by Nikki Hardy and Jamie Boardman, who each recorded 21 kills, Hardy also was credited with 29 digs, while Lauren Blough added 25, and Jill Ruskowski totaled 23. Jamie Boardman led the Mountaineer's net defense with one block solo and three block assists.

The Lady Paladins will face UNC Greensboro on Tuesday, Sept. 12, in the first conference match of the season. The Lady Paladins will open the home season on Sept. 18, in a 6 p.m. match against the College of Charleston.
