SIMON LEADS FURMAN VOLLEYBALL TO 3-0 DEFEAT OF CHATTANOOGA

PALADINS MOVE TO 5-1 IN SOUTHERN CONFERENCE WITH WIN

GREENVILLE, SCSophomore Abby Simon of Simpsonville, SC, hit .476 with 11 kills and five digs to lead the Furman volleyball team to a 3-0 win over Chattanooga on Saturday afternoon at Timmons Arena. The win gives the Paladins a 6-11 overall record and a 5-1 Southern Conference mark, while the Mocs drop to 7-9 overall and 4-2 in the conference with the loss.

Chattanooga opened the match with a 5-0 lead before Furman regrouped to win game one 15-8. The Paladins took a 7-6 lead in game two then allowed the Mocs just one point the rest of the game, winning 15-7. After the break, Chattanooga led 5-0 in game three. With the Mocs winning 6-1, Simon came on to serve and the Paladins reeled off 10-straight points to take an 11-6 advantage before Chattanooga forced a side-out. Furman then held on for the 15-7 win.

Furman sophomore Shawn Beckham recorded 14 kills and 19 attempts for a .737 attack percentage, while sophomore Laura Bush hit .348 with 12 kills, six digs and four block assists. Junior setter Laura Hooks tallied 45 assists in the match, with one block solo and three block assists. Sophomore Carrie Rowley had 11 kills and 11 digs, and freshman Amber Montague paced the team with 12 digs.

Chattanooga was led by senior Carol Reedus, who hit .333 with seven kills. Sophomore setter Jenn Anderson recorded 26 assists, and freshman Kari Krouse had nine digs.

Furman will travel to Cullowhee, NC, on Monday to face Western Carolina at 7 p.m.
