rookie leads furman volleyball to 3-0 defeat of the citadel

Paladins improve to 4-1 in Southern Conference with win

GREENVILLE, SCFreshman Amber Montague of Plano, TX, recorded nine kills, five service aces and seven digs to lead Furman to a 3-0 win (15-4, 15-7, 15-9) over The Citadel on Wednesday night at Timmons Arena on the campus of Furman University. With the win, the Paladins improve to 5-11 overall and 4-1 in the Southern Conference. The Bulldogs drop to 2-10, 0-5 with the loss.

Furman jumped out to an early lead in game one, holding The Citadel to a -.313 attack percentage. The Paladins pulled out a 15-7 win in game two, before the Bulldogs kept game three close. Furman held on for the 15-9 win in the third set, with consecutive aces by Montague.

Freshman Michelle Cauldwell of Satellite Beach, FL, led the Paladins with 20 assists, while sophomores Abby Simon (Simpsonville, SC) and Shawn Beckham (Summerville, SC) added five kills each for the team. The Citadel was led by sophomore Nicole Mantu of Corona, CA, with 12 kills, three errors and 22 attempts for a .409 attack percentage. She tallied eight digs to pace the Bulldogs.
