FURMAN VOLLEYBALL DEFEATS WESTERN CAROLINA, 3-0

Shawn Beckham hits .514 to lead Paladins

GREENVILLE, SCSophomore Shawn Beckham (Summerville, SC) hit .514 with 19 kills, one error and 35 attempts to lead the Furman volleyball team to a 3-0 win over Western Carolina Monday night at Timmons Arena. The Paladins came from behind in each game, taking a 15-13, 15-13, 15-12 win over the Catamounts.

Western Carolina built a 10-3 lead in game one before Furman rallied back, outscoring the Cats 12-3 for the 15-13 win. The teams battled back and forth in game two, with seven ties in the game. The Paladins scored two points to break a 13-13 tie and take a 15-13 victory. Western Carolina pulled ahead again in game three, but Furman came on strong at the end for the 15-12 win.

Furman sophomore Abby Simon (Simpsonville, SC) recorded a .308 attack percentage with 15 kills and four blocks, while sophomore Laura Bush (Kingsport, TN) added 12 kills and 14 digs. She had five blocks in the win. Freshman Amber Montague (Plano, TX) had 12 kills and nine digs, and sophomore Carrie Rowley (Lighthouse Pt., FL) recorded 11 kills and 11 digs. Junior setter Laura Hooks (Kingsport, TN) tallied 51 assists and 13 digs in the victory.

Junior Christy Atteberry (Henderson, NV) led Western Carolina with 17 kills and 14 digs. Junior Ashley Minton (Dallas, TX) added 18 digs, and junior setter Bri Milan-Williams (Jenson Beach, FL) recorded 48 assists.

With the win, Furman improves to 14-16 overall and 13-5 in the Southern Conference. Western Carolina falls to 16-13 overall and 11-6 in league play. The Paladins will face Georgia Southern on Friday at 7 p.m.
