FURMAN VOLLEYBALL DEFEATS UNC GREENSBORO, 3-1

Simon records 20 kills and 14 digs in Paladin win

GREENVILLE, SCSophomore outside hitter Abby Simon of Simpsonville, S.C., hit .286 with 20 kills and 14 digs to lead the Furman volleyball team to a 3-1 win over UNC Greensboro Tuesday night at Timmons Arena. The Paladins jumped out to a quick 15-3 win in game one before allowing the Spartans to take a close game two, 17-15. Furman rebounded after the break, winning game three 15-1 and game four 15-7.

For the Paladins, sophomore Laura Bush (Kingsport, Tenn.) hit .366 with 19 kills and 13 digs, while junior setter Laura Hooks recorded a .364 attack percentage and tallied 59 assists and 10 digs. Sophomore Shawn Beckham (Summerville, S.C.) had 16 kills and 18 digs in the win.

Senior right side hitter Cheryl Foster (Elkin, N.C.) led UNC Greensboro, hitting .269 with 10 kills and 10 digs. Senior Becky Moore (Marietta, Ga.) added eight kills and four block assists, while junior setter Robyn Jameson had 38 assists and eight digs. Junior middle hitter Kerry Stewart (London, Ontario) had five block assists and one block solo to pace the Spartans.

With the win, the Paladins improve to 9-12 overall and 8-2 in the Southern Conference. UNC Greensboro falls to 6-15 overall and 4-7 in league play. Furman will travel to Charleston this weekend for two Southern Conference matches, facing The Citadel on Friday at 7 p.m. and the College of Charleston on Saturday at 6 p.m. The Paladins return home on Tuesday, October 24, to face Clemson at Timmons Arena at 7 p.m.
