Furman Downs Georgia Southern, 3-2

Statesboro, Ga. - Furman used a rally in the fifth game to defeat Georgia Southern 3-2 in Southern Conference volleyball action Friday night at Hanner Fieldhouse.

The Paladins jumped out to a 6-1 lead in the first game before Georgia Southern stormed back to take a 13-11 lead. However, Furman (8-11, 7-1) scored the final four points of the match to claim a 15-13 victory.

Game two again saw Georgia Southern jump out to a 13-11 lead. This time the Eagles (8-9, 3-6) held tough to claim a 15-13 victory and tie the match at one game apiece.

The next two games were more lopsided as Georgia Southern won game three 15-7, and the Paladins claimed a 15-6 victory in game four to set up a deciding fifth game.

The Eagles jumped out quickly in the final frame, claiming a 6-1 lead before a Furman timeout. The Paladins rebounded to take a 8-7 lead before the teams traded points. With the score tied at 11, Furman recoreded three straight points off their serve to earn match point Gerogia Southern attempted one more run, cutting the deficit to 14-13 before falling 15-13.

The Paladins were led by Laura Bush, who finished with 15 kills and a .273 hitting percentage. Abby Simon and Amber Montague had 14 kills each for Furman, while Carrie Rowley tallied 10. Laura Hooks finished with 46 assists and 21 digs.

Furman returns to action Friday, October 13 as the Lady paladins host Davidson in a 7:00 p.m. match.
