GREENVILLE, South Carolina -- The Furman volleyball team improved to 6-9 overall and 2-0 in the Southern Conference Tuesday night with a 3-0 victory over Western Carolina (7-7, 0-1).
With game one tied at 12 Furman outside hitter Whitney Purser served up nine consecutive points, including four aces in a row to take the 21-13 advantage. Furman went on to win game one 30-24, hitting .306, while holding the Catamounts to a .167 mark.
In game two, a tie at 19 was broken when Furman slowly began to pull ahead, eventually defeating WCU 30-24 on .295 hitting.
The third and final game saw Furman take a 30-27 decision. Whitney Purser again gave the Lady Paladins an early lead, taking a 9-7 Furman disadvantage and turning it into a 10-10 tie. The Lady Paladins eventually took the game 30-24, ending on a kill by Amber Montague, who totaled 11 kills on the night.
In addition to Montague's performance, junior Julia Fredrickson totaled 14 kills and a team-high .409 hitting percetage, while Whitney Purser served up four aces. Fredrickson also led Furman's net defense with three blocks and totaled 14.5 points for the match.
The Catamounts were led by Sara Komosinski's 11 kill performance and team-high six blocks.
The Lady Paladins are in action again on Saturday, Sept. 27, at UNC Greensboro.
