Georgia Southern Volleyball Downs Furman Statesboro, Ga. – Three Eagles recorded double-digit kills to lead Georgia Southern in a 3-1 victory over Southern Conference rival Furman, Saturday afternoon in Hanner Fieldhouse. The Eagles jumped out to a 10-6 lead over the Paladins in game one. Kills by junior Martina Veiglova and senior Tyra Ciuni ended the game with a 30-21 win for GSU. Furman retaliated in game two outhitting Georgia Southern .243-.111 and taking a 30-24 victory. Despite a team hitting percentage of .037 the Eagles won game three 30-21. Furman hit a disappointing -.133 in the game. Neither team hit double-digits with Georgia Southern putting down nine kills and Furman eight. The Paladins took a 12-9 lead over the Eagles in game four, however, never gained more than a three-point lead. GSU tied the game at 20 as the two teams battled with two more ties until the Eagles pulled away with a two-point lead (27-25). Senior Lauren McClain added two kills to put Furman away by a score of 30-28 and winning the match. Georgia Southern’s Veiglova led the team in kills with 16 and recorded a double-double with 10 digs. Freshman Susan Winkelman also recorded a double-double for the Eagles with 20 assists and 10 digs. Junior Erin Martin and McClain each added 14 kills.Junior Megan Lippi added 15 digs to the effort to lead the team in defense. Recording Furman’s only double-double was junior setter Michelle Cauldwell with 41 assists and 10 digs. Senior Abby Simon led the Paladins in kills with 13 while freshman Caitlin White and senior Laura Bush added 11 and 10 kills, respectively. Defensively, the team was led by senior Carrie Rowley with 15. Georgia Southern remains undefeated in league play with a 9-0 record and 14-6 overall while Furman falls to 13-9 and 8-2 in the SoCon. The Eagles host Wofford Sunday afternoon, game time is set for 2:00 p.m. Furman returns home to host Davidson, October 18 at 7:00 p.m. | ||
