FURMAN FALLS TO DAVIDSON 3-1 IN VOLLEYBALL

GREENVILLE, South Carolina -- Furman's Lady Paladin volleyball team opened the 2002 Southern Conference slate Tuesday night with a 3-1 loss to the Wildcats of Davidson.

The Lady Paladins fell 30-24 in game one before coming back to post a 30-28 victory in the second game. Games three and four went to the Wildcats 30-28 and 30-25 when Furman hit just .167 and .095, respectively.

Furman was led on the night by senior Laura Bush's (Kingsport, Tenn.) 14 kills, while Abby Simon (Simpsonville, S.C.) added 11 and Amber Montague (Plano, Texas) contributed 10. Simon, Montague, and setter Michelle Cauldwell (Satellite Beach, Fla.) each recorded double-figure digs, while Bush added a team-high five blocks to the Furman defensive effort.

The Wildcats also had three players with double digit kills in Julia Hueckel (17), Latisha Chapman (15) and Robert Quis (10). In addition, Rebecca Teichgraeber, Tamara Gallen, Nicole Tonelli, and Hueckel totaled 10 or more digs on the night.

Furman, 4-4 overall and 0-1 in the Southern Conference, will travel to Colorado Springs, Colo. this weekend for the Air Force Academy Invitational. The Lady Paladins will face Air Force and Northern Arizona on Friday with matches against California-Irvine and Georgia State slated for Saturday.
