FURMAN VOLLEYBALL MOVES TO 2-2

WILLIAMSBURG, VA. -- The Furman volleyball team moved to 2-2 on the year Saturday with a 3-0 victory over East Carolina, followed by a 3-0 loss to William & Mary at the Hi-IQ Classic.

Furman outdid ECU 30-20, 30-22, 30-25 in the 11 a.m. match. Laura Bush (Kingsport, Tenn.) led the offensive effort with 14 kills, while Carrie Rowley (Lighthouse Point, Fla.) added 12 and Abby Simon (Simpsonville, S.C.) contributed 10. Defensively, the Lady Paladins were topped by Amber Montague (Plano, Texas), who tallied nine digs.

In match two, Simon paced the Paladin with 13 kills, while Bush added 12 and had a team-high .321 hitting percentage. Simon also added two block assists, while Rowley recorded a Furman-best nine digs. The Tribe of William and Mary downed the Lady Paladins 30-26, 30-25, 30-25, with strong hitting by Kristin Gundersen (13 kills) and Carly Huffman (16 kills). In addition, the Tribe out-dug FU 54 to 32 and had nine blocks to the Lady Paladins' three.

Furman returns to Greenville for a week of practice before hosting the Holiday Inn Express Downtown Invitational next Friday and Saturday, Sept. 6-7. Furman will face Gardner-Webb, UNC Wilmington and Ohio University in that tournament, within the friendly confines of Timmons Arena.
