FILAR NAMED ASSISTANT VOLLEYBALL COACH AT FURMAN

GREENVILLE, South Carolina -- Former Eastside junior varsity coach Travis Filar has been named assistant volleyball coach at Furman University, it was announced on Thursday.

Filar, the son of former Davidson women's basketball coach John Filar, will officially begin work July 1, assisting head coach Michelle Young with the Lady Paladin team that went 15-5 and tied for second in Southern Conference play last year.

"I am so pleased to have Travis join the Lady Paladin volleyball program," said Young. "Travis is enthusiastic about the future of our volleyball team and knows Furman well enough to be an excellent recruiter for the program and the school. I am certain he will be a tremendous addition to the staff."

A 2000 graduate of Furman University with a degree in health and exercise science, Filar spent the 2000-01 school year teaching physical education at Bryson Elementary in Simpsonville, S.C. He also worked as the head junior varsity coach for Eastside High's girls' volleyball team and boys' basketball program, and assisted with the respective varsity teams.

In addition to his experience at Eastside High, Filar has worked volleyball camps at Davidson College and UNC Charlotte the last four summers, and played two years of club level volleyball while at Furman. He will also work the 2001 Furman volleyball camps and will take on additional administrative duties in the coming years.

Filar, who enjoys playing all sports, travel, and photography, will work with all aspects of the Furman volleyball program, including recruiting, on-the-floor coaching, and administration.
