FURMAN TOPS UTC IN THREE GAMES


CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. -- Chattanooga tried for its first back-to-back Southern Conference wins of the season, but Furman clipped the Lady Mocs in a close three-game match 30-22, 30-28, 31-29 Sunday afternoon at Maclellan Gym.

The Lady Mocs got a big lift off the bench from Tara Darr, who had eight kills and hit .778, but as a team UTC hit just .172. Georgetta Bracy led UTC with nine kills and 19 digs. Kari Krouse had five aces, seven kills and 13 digs. Emily McGinnis added 10 kills and 39 assists.

Furman won the first game handily, but the second game was tied 26-all before Furman got two late kills from Amber Montague for the win. In the third game, UTC was down 20-11 before the Lady Mocs rallied behind Krouse's serving and Darr's hitting to forge a 28-all tie, but Furman again got big points late from a quartet of hitters.

Laura Bush led the Paladins (7-4, 3-4) with 12 kills while Montague, Abby Simon and Carrie Rowley each had 11. Rowley added 17 digs and Montague 16. Laura Hooks had 41 assists. Furman got nine aces, three each by Rosey Cashman and Rowley.
