FURMAN SET TO OPEN HOME SEASON

GREENVILLE, South Carolina -- Furman's Lady Paladin volleyball team posted a 1-1 record at the Golden Gate Classic in San Francisco on Friday and Saturday, but junior outside hitter Abby Simon (Simpsonville, S.C.) stood out enough to receive All-Tournament honors.

Simon, a product of Christ Church Episcopal in Greenville, S.C., recorded 33 kills for a 4.71 per game average, 14 digs, and three service aces in the two Lady Paladin matches. She topped the team in kills in both matches, tallying 14 against the Dons of San Francisco and 19 versus the Cowgirls of Wyoming.

Simon was a 2000 All-Southern Conference selection and 2001 preseason all-league choice.

Furman opens its home volleyball season on Friday, Sept. 7, with a 7 p.m. match against Gardner-Webb in the first round of the Furman Invitational. The Lady Paladins will play Charleston Southern Saturday at 11 a.m. and Central Florida Saturday evening at 6 p.m.
