LADY PALADINS AND GOLDEN KNIGHTS EARN WINS AT FURMAN INVITATIONAL

GREENVILLE, South Carolina -- Furman's Lady Paladin volleyball team opened its home season Friday night with a 3-0, 30-11, 30-20, 30-16 victory over Gardner-Webb in the Furman Invitational Volleyball Tournament. Earlier in the evening, the Golden Knights of Central Florida topped the Charleston Southern Buccaneers 30-16, 30-13, 30-13 to improve to 3-1 on the season.

UCF dominated the net Friday night, recording 11 team blocks to the Buc's zero. In addition, the Golden Knights hit .423 while holding CSU to a -.030 mark on offense. UCF was led by sophomore Layre Santaella Sante, who tallied 18 kills and a .471 attack percentage. Junior Cassy Kerner added 12 kills, while Lindsey Whalengarnered a team-high 12 digs and setter Jenny Frank totaled 21 assists.

The Buccaneers were topped by Kacey Dupler's six kills and Jenny Shaw's seven digs.

In the nightcap, the Lady Paladins outhit Gardner-Webb .412 to .078 to improve to 2-1 on the year. Sophomore Amber Montague and middle blocker Rosey Cashman each tallied 13 kills, while junior Laura Bush added 11. Senior setter Laura Hooks led the squad with 41 assists and 13 digs, while Abby Simon and Cashman each added 10. Cashman, a freshman from Faribault, Minn., also tallied a team-high three block assists.

Furman will face Charleston Southern Saturday morning at 11 a.m. to start day two of the Furman Invitational. UCF will meet Gardner-Webb at 1 p.m., with Gardner-Webb and CSU facing off at 4 p.m. The nightcap, slated for 6 p.m. will feature Furman and the Golden Knights of UCF. All games will be played in Timmons Arena and admission is free.
