FURMAN CROSS COUNTRY OPENS
SEASON WITH SECOND, THIRD PLACE SHOWINGS AT
CULLOWHEE, North Carolina -- Furman's Paladin cross country squad placed second and the Lady Paladins took third Saturday at the 2002 Catamount Classic Cross Country Invitational. It was the opening meet for the Furman squads and featured strong showings by a number of Furman distance runners.
The Furman men tallied 63 points in finishing second to the host Western Carolina Catamounts. Georgia placed third with 71 points, while ETSU took fourth with 75. The Paladins were paced by junior Kevin Crosby (Matthews, N.C.) who covered the 5K course in 15:31 for a sixth-place showing. Senior Matthew Goodwin (Greenville, S.C.) took eighth in 15:35, while Grady Powell (Erie, Pa.) finished 13th in 15:52 and Tyler Johnson, a freshman from Knoxville, Tenn., placed 14th in 16:03.
The Lady Paladin squad recorded 52 points, finishing behind Georgia (44) and Western Carolina (51). Freshman Brittany Thompson (Arvada, Colo.) finished an impressive fourth, with a time of 13:59 over the 4K course, while Whitney Kay Sharp (Roswell, Ga.) took seventh in 14:02 and Bev Roberts (Columbia, S.C.) finished nineth in 14:18.
The Furman cross country squads will return to action next Saturday, September 14, at the U.S. Naval Academy Invitational in Annapolis, Md.
