Appalachian State, Chattanooga Win Cross Country Championships
Furman Women Place Sixth, Men Seventh, Howard All-Conference

CHARLESTON, SC --
The Southern Conference Menıs and Womenıs Cross Country Championships were held this morning at the James Island County Park in Charleston, SC. Appalachian Stateıs men defended their 2000 crown with the Chattanooga women winning their third title.

Western Carolinaıs Jesse Norman won the individual title for the Catamounts after finishing 18th in the 2000 race, earning Runner of the Year honors. Appalachian State had four runners finish in the Top 10 , including Shawn Evans who finished fourth for the Mountaineers. ETSU Bradley Yewer finished second and was named the SoCon Freshman of the Year. Davidsonıs Dan Gibson finished sixth with UTCıs Steven Kocsis taking home seventh for the Mocs. The SoCon coaches selected Appalachian Stateıs Mike Curcio as the Coach of the Year.

Chattanooga swept the top two spots and had all five runners finish in the Top 10 in the womenıs competition to lead the Lady Mocs to the title. Gina Recher, the SoCon womenıs Runner of the Year, won the meet with a time of 17:54, followed by Freshman of the Year Shannon Womack. Sarah Primeau from Appalachian State placed third with ETSUıs Roseline Addo and Furmanıs Erin Howard rounded out the top five. UTCıs Blair Collins finished sixth with Davidsonıs Sally Stanhope taking seventh. UNCGıs Mary Nero and Chattanoogaıs Amy Doolittle and Ellen Davis complete the Top 10. Chattanooga head coach Bill Gautier was selected the womenıs Coach of the Year.

Appalachian State has won six menıs cross country titles while Chattanoogaıs women has brought home three. The Top 10 finishers from each race also earned All-Conference honors.
