BRALEY LEADS LADY PALADINS TO WINTHROP TITLE

FURMAN MEN FINISH FIFTH

ROCK HILL, South Carolina -- For the second consecutive week Furman senior Jill Braley set a personal best in collegiate 5K competition and took medalist honors, while leading her Lady Paladin squad to the team title. This week, it was the Winthrop Invitational in Rock Hill, S.C., and it comes on the heels of a victory in the Western Carolina Catamount Meet a week ago.

Braley's mark of 17:47 gave her the individual title at Winthrop by 27 seconds over second-place finisher Erica Van Reenan of Clemson. In addition, Furman's Lory Gray (18:52) and Dana Smith (18:54) each placed in the top 10 to help Furman score just 43 points, topping second-place Clemson by 11. Furman also scored key victories over Southern Conference competitors UNC Greensboro, Appalachian State, VMI, and Wofford.

In the men's 8K, senior Tim Briles recorded a time of 25:27 to finish fourth individually and lead the Paladin squad to a fifth-place showing in the field of nine. Sophomore Grady Powell was the second Paladin finisher, taking 19th with a 26:19 showing, while Matthew Goodwin and Yuri van der Heijden placed 35th and 36th with times of 26:56 and 26:59, respectively.

The Furman cross country squads are in action again on Friday, Sept. 22, at the Great American Cross Country Classic in Charlotte, N.C.
