WINTHROP INVITATIONAL
ROCK HILL, South Carolina -- The Furman men's cross country team placed fourth and the women took fifth at the Winthrop Invitational Cross Country meet Saturday in Rock Hill.
For the second consecutive week Furman junior Tim Briles was the top Paladin finisher, this time taking 34th with a 26:14 mark over the 8K course. Senior co-captain Daniel Hughes was 38th with a time of 26:20, while junior Yuri van der Heijden placed 41st at 26:30. Freshmen Nathan Hanna and Grady Powell rounded out the Furman scorers, placing 55th and 61st, respectively.
The Paladins finished behind Wake Forest, Clemson, and North Carolina, but defeated five Southern Conference teams: Davidson, VMI, UNCG, College of Charleston, and Wofford.
In the women's competition Furman was paced by former Lady Paladin soccer team member Jill Braley, who was running in just her second collegiate meet. Braley took 27th with a time of 18:50 over the three mile course and was followed closely by junior Lory Gray, who took 31st at 19:09, and sophomore Erin Howard, whose 19:10 showing placed her 32nd. Furman scoring was rounded out by Dana Smith in 38th and Lynley Roberts' 40th-place showing.
The Paladin teams have next weekend off before returning to action on Saturday, October 2, at The Citadel Invitational.
