FURMAN CROSS COUNTRY OPENS SEASON AT WESTERN CAROLINA CLASSIC

MEN FINISH FOURTH, WOMEN THIRD

CULLOWHEE, North Carolina -- Furman's Lady Paladin cross country team tallied 72 points for a third place showing at the Western Carolina Classic, while the men scored 115 for a fourth place finish.

Two Lady Paladins, juniors Lory Gray (Culpeper, Va.) and Jill Braley (Marietta, Ga.), finished in the top 10, taking sixth and eighth, respectively. While Gray is a returning all-conference performer, up until this year Braley played on the Furman soccer team and was racing in her first collegiate event. Sophomore Erin Howard (Weddington, N.C.) finished 15th with a time of 19:44, rounding out the Furman trio that posted sub 20-minute times over the 5K course.

In the 6K men's race junior Tim Briles (Bowie, Md.) led the Paladins with a 23rd-place, 19:34 showing, while Yuri van der Heijden (Lilburn, Ga.) was 25th with a time of 19:39. Daniel Hughes from Pickens, S.C., finished 28th at 19:44 and freshman Grady Powell (Erie, Pa.) was 31st at 19:50.

The Furman cross country teams will compete at the Winthrop Invitational next Saturday, Sept. 18, beginning at 9:30 a.m.
