BRALEY WINS STATE CROSS COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIP

COLUMBIA, South Carolina -- Furman junior Jill Braley won the South Carolina State Collegiate Cross Country Championships, hosted Saturday by the University of South Carolina. In addition, the Furman men and women placed second in their respective team competitions.

Braley ran the 5K race in 18:22.00, beating USC's Katie Orr by 11 seconds for the individual title. Furman junior Lory Gray placed fourth with an 18:41.80 showing, while Dana Smith took ninth in 18:51.20, giving the Lady Paladins three top 10 finishers. Sophomore Erin Howard was barely out of the top 10; she finished 11th with a time of 19:08.60.

In the men's competition, senior Yuri van der Heijden ran the 6K course in 19:23.60 to finish fourth, while Tim Briles placed sixth in 19:33.80 and Patrick Dillon took 10th in 19:49.60. Freshman Grady Powell was 13th with a 19:59.60 showing.

The Furman cross country teams are off next weekend in preparation for the Southern Conference Championships on Saturday, October 30, in Lexington, Va.
