FURMAN WOMEN'S TENNIS SWEEPS SOCON AWARDS


CHARLESTON, SC -- The Southern Conference announced the 2004 Men's and Women's All-Conference teams this afternoon.  The coaches have also selected the Player, Freshman and Coach of the Year as well as presenting the Sportsmanship Awards.  

After notching a perfect 10-0 record in SoCon singles play, College of Charleston's Or Dekel was named the Men's Tennis Player of the Year.  ETSU's Yaser Zaatini was named the Coach of the Year after guiding the Bucs to an undefeated mark in SoCon play.  ETSU also brought home the Freshman of the Year award after Oscar Posada finished the regular season 18-4, 9-1 in conference action.  

On the women's side, Furman's Mary Neill Hagood was tabbed the Women's Player of the Year after sweeping through the conference regular season with a 10-0 record, 14-8 overall. Furman also took home the Freshman of the Year honor with Jacqueline Eckert winning eight of her 10 conference matches. Debbie Southern took home the Coach of the Year award, winning the regular season.

The Sporstmanship awards are named after Southern Conference tennis legends Don Bunch and Buddy Hartsell. The Citadel's John Williams and Davidson's Meggie Patterson were selected for the award for their exemplary sportsmanship on the court and during the season.

Paladin Senior John Chesworth was named to the All-Conference First Team for his performance at No.1 singles. Chesworth went 9-1 in the Southern Conference and tallied a 14-9 overall singles record. Chesworth was also named to the All-Conference First Team along with partner Patrick Fillnow after going 13-7 (8-2 SoCon) at No. 1 doubles.

On the women's side Caroline Bentley teamed up with Jacqueline Eckert for a 12-8 (9-0 SoCon) record at No. 1doubles, which earned them a spot on the All-Conference First Team. Bentley was also named to the All-Conference Second Team for her perfect 9-0 conference record at No. 4 singles. The Lady Paladins two doubles teams of Mary Neill Hagood/Marti Morris and Lisa Bornt-Davis/Shannon Moore were both named to the All-Conference Second Team for their play at No. 2 and 3 doubles.
