HAGOOD NAMED SOUTHERN CONFERENCE TENNIS PLAYER OF THE WEEK

SPARTANBURG, SC -- The Southern Conference announced today that East Tennessee State's Oscar Posada and Furman's Mary Neill Hagood were selected as the Men's and Women's Tennis Players of the Week for April 13.

Posada, a freshman from Valencia, Venezuela, won three matches last week to help the Bucs maintain their unblemished 8- 0 record in the Southern Conference this season. On Thursday, Posada outlasted Furman's Patrick Fillnow, 7-6, 6-3. His victory propelled the Bucs past the Paladins, 5-2. Posada continued his undefeated week by downing Chattanooga's John Hangstefer 6-1, 6-4 on Saturday. The freshman closed out the week by edging Davidson senior Rob Haywood, 6-4, 6- 3. ETSU, thanks in part to Posada's rookie campaign, are currently ranked 69th by the Intercollegiate Tennis Associtation.

A native of Charleston, SC, Hagood recorded decisive wins against two Southern Conference opponents last week. Hagood began the week by beating East Tennessee State's Courtney McInnis 6-2, 6-0 on Wednesday. The junior continued her dominant play on Thursday as she defeated Appalachian State's number one singles player, Becky Gordon, 6-2, 6-2. Besides winning both of her singles matches, Hagood and doubles partner Marti Morris recorded two doubles victories last week. Hagood has helped the Paladins to earn 50 straight regular-season conference wins.

Other top performers include Elon's Pramote Malisitt, Furman's John Chesworth and Davidson's Kelly Fillnow. Malisitt went 3-0 in both singles and doubles last week while playing in the number one position. Chesworth, a senior for the Paladins, won his sixth and seventh straight matches after knocking off netters from Chattanooga and ETSU. Fillnow helped the Wildcats win their seventh match of the season after she won both her singles and doubles matches against UNCG last Tuesday.
