GREENVILLE, SC -- The Furman women's tennis team opened conference play on Saturday, blanking Georgia Southern 7-0. The win improved the Lady Paladins to 3-3 on the year, 1-0 in the Southern Conference, while Georgia Southern fell to 1-3, 0-1 in the Southern Conference.
The Paladins quickly captured the doubles point when Caroline Bentley and Jacqueline Eckert won No. 1 doubles 8-3 over Ciara Finucane and Amy Pazahanick and at No. 3 Marti Morris and Mary Neill Hagood defeated Callie Ward and Kim Wollett 8-3. In the No. 2 doubles slot Furman's Shannon Moore and Lisa Bornt-Davis battled hard to beat Szilvia Zsakay and Krystel Sauvageau in a tiebreaker 9-8(5).
With the momentum from the doubles matches, Furman went on to win all six singles matches. In the No. 1 slot Mary Neill Hagood ousted Ciara Finucane 7-6(2), 6-0 and Shannon Moore beat Charlotte Bruneteaux 6-2,6-2 at No. 2 singles. After Jacqueline Eckert downed Krystel Sauvageau 6-3,6-1 to win No. 3 singles, Caroline Bentley eased by Szilvia Zsakay 6-2,6-2 in flight 4. Bonnie Baird won her No. 5 singles match 6-4,6-1 agaist Amy Pazahanick, while Marti Morris battled back to defeat Heather Reynolds in the only three set match of the day 3-6,6-0,6-3.
Furman travels to California next week where they will take on Pepperdine on February 29, UC-Irvine on March 3 and Loyola-Marymount on March 4. All three teams are ranked in the top 75 in the country.
