FURMAN MEN AND WOMEN WIN 4-3 THRILLERS OVER COLLEGE OF CHARLESTON

GREENVILLE, SC -- The Furman men's and women's tennis teams stayed undefeated in the Southern Conference Saturday both downing College of Charleston 4-3. The victory marked three straight wins for both the men and women. The Lady Paladins improved to 9-7 (4-0 SoCon) while the women from College of Charleston fell to 11-6 (5-1 SoCon). The Furman men climbed to 7-9 (3-0 SoCon) dropping the Cougars to 10-6 (5-1 SoCon).

The Furman women captured the doubles point, taking an early 1-0 advantage. After splitting No.1 and No.2 doubles, Shannon Moore and Lisa Bornt-Davis sealed the doubles point downing Whitney Malina and Ashley Willis 9-7.

College of Charleston evened the score 1-1 when Lauren Stewart downed Lauren Welch 6-2,6-0 in the No.6 slot. Furman then won the next two matches when Mary Neill Hagood took the No.1 singles match over Rachel Magory 6-2, 6-4 and in flight four Caroline Bentley ousted Maxine Capewell 6-3,6-3. College of Charleston pulled a little closer when Whitney Malina pulled out a victory over Jacqueline Eckert 7-6(4),6-4 in No.3 singles. Furman's Marti Morris sealed the match with a three set victory over Andreea Niculescu 6-3,3-6,6-4. In the last match Lady Paladin Shannon Moore battled to a third set tie breaker but fell to Gabriela Moreira 6-1,5-7,7-6(6).

The Furman men began the afternoon winning all three doubles matches to take an early 1-0 lead. Furman then lost the next three matches at No.1, No.2 and No.5 to fall behind 3-1. Allen Simmons kept the Paladins alive downing Bastian Moldehnke 6-4,6-4 in the No.3 slot. Kevin Lackey then pulled the match to 3-3 with a 2-6,6-4,6-2 victory over Liran Kling at No. 6 singles. After dropping the first set Furman's Ben Pauluhn battled through a second set tie breaker downing Artie Peller 1-6,7-6(2),6-1 to seal the victory for the Paladins.

The Furman men and women return to action Sunday when the men travel to Statesboro, GA to take on Georgia Southern and the Lady Paladins host Wofford. Both matches begin at 1 PM.
