VANDERBILT WINS FOUR OF FIVE SINGLES MATCHES, ADVANCES TO NO. 1 DOUBLES CHAMPIONSHIP
GREENVILLE, South Carolina -- The 13th-ranked Commodores of Vanderbilt enjoyed a successful first day Friday at the Furman Fall Classic Tennis Tournament, winning four of five singles matches and advancing to the championship of No. 1 doubles against Clemson’s top tandem.
Audra Falk and Annie Menees defeated South Carolina’s Danielle Wiggins-Laura Ganzer duo 8-3 in the first round of doubles action, before topping North Carolina’s Lee Bairos-Jenno Long tandem in round two. Falk and Menees will face Clemson’s Julie Coin and Maria Brito at 9 a.m. Saturday morning in the doubles finals.
The host Lady Paladins of Furman will also square off in one of three doubles finals on Saturday, when Shannon Moore and Lisa Bornt-Davis face South Carolina’s Fallon Koon and Grace Blakely for the flight three title.
Furman also enjoyed a measure of success on Friday, posting victories in three singles matches during the afternoon action.. Marti Morris defeated Wisconsin’s Teresa Gonzaga 6-2, 6-3 in flight six singles, while Jacqueline Eckert topped Middle Tennessee State’s Emily Vest 6-2, 6-1 in flight five. Finally senior Lauren Welch scored a 6-1, 6-4 win over Penn State’s Katelyn BeVard, also in flight six.
Action in the 2003 Furman Fall Classic continues on Saturday at the Minor Mickel Tennis Center, with the championship round of doubles slated for a 9 a.m. start. Round two of the three round singles competition will start at 11 a.m. with the last match scheduled for a 2:30 p.m. start time.
