GREENVILLE, S.C. -- The Furman women's tennis team opened its spring season with a 4-3 loss to the Lady Eagles of Winthrop Saturday morning. In the afternoon match, the Lady Paladins bounced back to defeat Presbyterian's Blue Hose 7-0, moving Furman to a 1-1 record on the season.

Winthrop gained the momentum early grabbing the doubles point with two close wins. Renata Barreto and Ana Novaes of Winthrop defeated Mary Neill Hagood and Lisa Bornt-Davis of Furman 8-6, while Winthrop's Renata Caceres and Paula Takahashi downed Furman's Marti Morris and Lauren Welch 8-5. The Lady Paladins, however, won the No. 1 doubles match with Caroline Bentley and Jacqueline Eckert defeating Jenny Andrade and Ana Simanca 8-0.

Furman got off to a good start in the singles round with Mary Neill Hagood beating Paula Takahashi 6-3,6-1 in the No. 1 slot, and Shannon Moore defeating Danielle Moita 6-2,6-2 in the No. 2 slot. At No. 3 Winthrop's Jenny Adrade held off Jacqueline Eckert 6-2,3-6,6-3 and at No. 4 Ana Novaes of Winthrop beat Furman's Bonnie Baird 6-0,6-3. Winthrop sealed the match when Renata Barreto downed Lauren Welch 6-2,6-3 in the No. 5 slot. At No. 6 Shellie Cochran of Furman ousted Renata Caceres 6-4,6-3.

In afternoon action the Lady Paladins started off strong winning the doubles point with all three doubles victories. Furman never looked back winning all six singles matches in straight sets. At No.1 Mary Neill Hagood downed Elise Netzler 6-0,6-0 and Shannon Moore defeated Catherine Bankhead 6-4,6-2 in No.2 action. After Bonnie Baird's 6-1,6-0 No. 3 singles victory, Lauren Welch eased by Lauren Ingle 6-0,6-2 in the No. 4 slot. The Lady Paladins ended the day with Caroline Bentley defeating Taylor Lynch 6-2,6-1 at No. 5 and Lisa Bornt-Davis downing Anne Gilmore 6-1,6-1 in flight six.

The Lady Paladins will next face the South Carolina Gamecocks at 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday in Columbia, S.C.
