BLACKSBURG, VA -- The Furman Women's Tennis team dropped to 2-3 on the year Sunday after losing 6-1 to 67th ranked Virginia Tech. With the win the Hokies stayed undefeated at 5-0 on the season.
The match began with the morning doubles competition as Kinard/Lam of Virginia Tech beat Furman's Bentley/Eckert 8-5 at No. 1 and Virginia Tech clinched the doubles point when Elazari/Lowdermilk won 8-3 in the No. 2 event over Lisa Bornt-Davis/Moore. Furman's Hagood/Morris won the No. 3 match 8-4 against James/Rodriguez.
With the doubles point already won, Virginia Tech won five straight singles matches with Furman's only singles win coming when Marti Morris beat Carolina Rodriguez in the No. 6 slot. Anat Elazari won a tight three-set No. 1 match 6-3, 0-6, 6-4 against Mary Neill Hagood while Ginger Lowdermilk defeated Shannon Moore 6-3, 6-3 in the No. 2 contest. Tech picked up other singles victories as Felice Lam won 6-4, 6-4 at No. 3 over Jacqueline Eckert, Ashley James downed Caroline Bentley 6-3, 6-2 at No. 4 and Elissa Kinard won 6-2, 6-4 at No. 5 over Bonnie Baird.
Furman has an early conference match
on Saturday, February 21, when Georgia Southern visits Greenville, SC. Match
begins at 11:00.
