FURMAN WOMEN'S TENNIS UPSET NO.75 N.C. STATE 4-3

GREENVILLE, SC -- The Furman women's tennis team pulled out a 4-3 upset of No. 75 North Carolina State Thursday at the Mickel Tennis Center. The win improves the Lady Paladins to 6-6 on the year, while dropping N.C. State to 5-5.

After splitting the first two doubles matches, the doubles point came down to the No.1 match. N.C State narrowly escaped with the victory when Kristin Lam and Barbara Orlay downed Caroline Bentley and Jacqueline Eckert in a tiebreaker 9-8(8).

Furman quickly took the lead in singles when Shannon Moore won by injury default in the No.2 slot and Marti Morris eased by Vania Apodaca 6-1, 6-0 in the No. 5 slot. Bonnie Baird then put Furman up 3-1 downing Agustina Arechevaleta 6-1, 6-4 in flight six action. The Wolfpack evened the score to three apiece when Barbara Orlay downed Mary Neill Hagood 7-6(4), 6-2 at No.1 and in flight 3 Nandita Chandrasekar battled hard to beat Jacqueline Eckert 2-6, 6-0, 6-3. In the last match of the day Furman's Caroline Bentley sealed the victory with a 7-6(3), 6-3 defeat over Jennifer Jassawalla at No.4.

The Lady Paladins travel to Atlanta on Saturday to take on Georgia Tech at 10, then move on the Chattanooga, TN for a match agaist conference rival Chattanooga Sunday at 11.
