GREENVILLE, S.C.-- The Furman women's tennis team defeated a tough Davidson Wildcat tennis squad 7-0 this afternoon at Mickel Tennis Center. With the win, Furman moves to 8-8 overall and 4-0 in conference play while Davidson drops to 7-4 overall and 1-2 in league competition. The victory also marks Furman's 48th consecutive win against a conference opponent, a streak which dates back to a March 28, 1999 9-0 triumph over Davidson.
The Lady Paladins began by sweeping Davidson in doubles action to take the doubles point. At No. 1, Furman's Mary Kovarik and Natalie The held off Davidson's twin sister duo of Kelly and Meghan Fillnow, 8-6. While Caroline Bentley and Shannon Moore defeated Meggie Patterson and Lindsey Powel 8-6 in flight two action, Furman's Mary Neill Hagood and Krista Thomson overpowered Katherine Hatch and Sarah Bonkowski at No. 3, 8-4.
Furman then won each of its six singles matches to claim the victory. At No. 1, Furman's Kovarik rallied from a one-set deficit against Kelly Fillnow to win her match, 3-6, 6-3, 6-3. After The defeated Meghan Fillnow 6-2, 6-0 at flight three, Hagood won her No. 2 singles match against Patterson by a 7-6 (2), 6-1 score. Moore won her match at No. 4 against Powel, 6-3, 6-2, while Bentley edged Hatch at No. 5, 6-1, 4-6, 1-0 (10-8). Furman's final victory came at the No. 6 slot, where Shellie Cochran earned a 6-0, 7-5 triumph against Bonkowski.
Furman will stay home to face the Georgia State Panthers on Sunday at 12:00 p.m.
