FURMAN WOMEN'S TENNIS DOWNS AIR FORCE 6-1

COLORADO SPRINGS, CO.--- The 64th ranked Furman women's tennis team defeated the Air Force Academty 6-1 at the Cadet Gymnasium Indoor Courts.

Furman took an early 1-0 lead by winning at No. 1 and 3 doubles. Mary Kovarik and Natalie The took the No. 1 match over AFA¹s Heather Shelby and Kat Bushey, 8-6, while Furman¹s Krista Thomson and Lauren Welch beat Kelli O¹Bryant and Jen Nigro, 8-1, at No. 3. The Falcons¹ No. 2 duo of Laura Nigro and Gina Black beat Caroline Bentley and Mary Neill Hagood, 8-5.

Three of the singles matches were extended to a third-set super-tiebreak, with Furman capturing two of them. The beat Bushey, 5-7, 7-6, 10-3 at No. 3, while Bentley defeated O¹Bryant 4-6, 6-2, 6-2 at No. 4. Black notched the only singles win for Air Force at No. 5, beating Shellie Cochran, 6-2, 4-6, 10-6. Kovarik defeated Laura Nigro, 6-0, 6-3, at No. 1 and Hagood beat Shelby, 6-3, 6-1, at No. 2 singles.

Furman improves to 4-5 on the season and will take on Denver Saturday in Colorado Springs, Co.
