No. 3 GEORGIA SHUTS DOWN FURMAN LADY PALADIN TENNIS, 7-0

GREENVILLE, S.C.-- The third-ranked Georgia Bulldogs proved to be too much for the 58th ranked Furman Lady Paladin tennis team as Georgia claimed a 7-0 win Friday night at Mickel Tennis Center. The win moves Georgia to 1-0 on the season and drops Furman to 0-1.

Georgia started the day by winning the doubles point. At No. 1, the Bulldogs' Agata Cioroch and Evgenia Subbotina defeated Mary Kovarik and Caroline Bentley, 8-5. Georgia's Lori Grey and Tina Hojnik beat Natalie The and Marti Morris 8-0 at the No. 2 position, while Alex Smith and Jennifer Hodge edged Furman's Krista Thomson and Mary Neill Hagood at No. 3, 8-7 (4).

Georgia then went on to sweep the Lady Paladins in singles action to clinch the victory. At No. 1, Cioroch, the No. 1 ranked player in the country, earned a straight-set victory against Kovarik, 6-2, 6-0. Georgia's Anne Nguyen defeated Hagood at the No. 2 slot, 6-1, 7-5, while Hojnik claimed a 6-0, 6-1 triumph at the No. 3 spot against Furman's The. The Bulldogs' Grey also won in straight sets as she defeated Furman's Shannon Moore at No. 4, 7-6 (8), 6-2. At the No. 5 slot, Subbotina upended Furman's Shellie Cochran 6-4, 6-3, while Lady Paladin Marti Morris was downed by Smith at No. 6, 6-1, 6-0.

Furman will face the Illinois State Redbirds for a 1:00 p.m. showdown on Saturday at Mickel Tennis Center. Georgia, meanwhile, will face Illinois State at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday at Mickel Tennis Center.
