FURMAN WOMEN'S TENNIS SHUTS OUT GEORGIA STATE, 7-0

GREENVILLE, S.C.-- The Furman women's tennis team moved to 9-8 on the year when the Lady Paladins downed the Georgia State Panthers 7-0 at Mickel Tennis Center on Sunday.

Furman began by sweeping the Panthers in doubles action. At No. 1, Mary Kovarik and Natalie The defeated Anne Breiholtz and Annamaria Forgacs, 8-1, while Shannon Moore and Marti Morris beat Karmelina Rivera and Rebecca Mitchell at No. 2, 8-4. Furman's Mary Neill Hagood and Krista Thomson won their flight three doubles match 8-1 against Christina O'Neal and Karine Etienne.

The Lady Paladins then won each of their six singles contests to claim the victory, with the toughest matches of the day occurring at the Nos. 1 and 6 positions. At No. 1, Furman's Kovarik held off Breiholtz in a tight three-set contest, 6-4, 5-7, 6-3. At No. 6, meanwhile, Lady Paladin Lauren Welch edged Etienne, 6-1, 5-7, 1-0 (10-5). Furman's Hagood, The, Moore, and Shellie Cochran also earned victories for the Lady Paladins.

Furman will next face the Western Carolina Catamounts within the friendly confines of Mickel Tennis Center on Wednesday at 3:00 p.m.
