GREENVILLE, S.C.-- The Vanderbilt women's tennis team, ranked seventh at the conclusion of the 2002 spring season, enjoyed a successful day one at the Furman Fall Classic as the Lady Commodores took two of three doubles championships on Friday at Mickel Tennis Center. The tournament was not originally slated to play all three rounds of doubles today, but tournament officials were forced to make adjustments due to inclement weather.

In flight one action, Vanderbilt's Sarah Riske and Aleke Tsoubanos, the No. 1 ranked doubles tandem in the country, outlasted fellow Commodores Kelly Schmandt and Audra Falk 8-6 to take the championship. Vanderbilt also had players win the flight two title as Kori Scott and Ashley Schellhas won their championship match against Middle Tennessee State's Laura McNamara and Jennifer Klaschka by virtue of a default by injury.

In flight three play, South Carolina's Danielle Wiggins and Ayako Suzuki defeated Wisconsin's Lexi Goldin and Teresa Gonzaga 8-2 to win the final.

The homestanding Furman Lady Paladins' highest finish came in flight one, where Natalie The and Marti Morris placed fourth. Morris and The held off South Carolina's Kathy Boyanovich and Jodi Kenoyer 8-5 before losing to Vanderbilt's Riske and Tsoubanos 8-0 and Middle Tennessee State's No. 10 ranked Manon Kruse and Stacy Varnell, 8-3.

The Fall Classic will continue tomorrow with two rounds of singles. First round play will begin at 9:00 a.m., followed by second round action at 1:00 p.m.
