FURMAN'S DUNIGAN DEFEATS NO. 11 WOMEN'S TENNIS PLAYER IN NATION

KNOXVILLE, TENN. - Furman women's tennis player Megan Dunigan recorded a monumental 6-3, 6-4 victory over North Carolina's No. 11 ranked Marlene Mejia today at the University of Tennessee's 2001 St. Mary's Health System Women's Tennis Classic.

With the win, Dunigan, who is currently ranked No. 95 nationally, advances to the second round of the tournament's top flight.

Furman's McCall Holman delivered the Lady Paladins' only other singles win on the day with a 7-5, 3-6, 6-2 victory against Mississippi State's Elaine Fagan.

In doubles action, Furman's Krista Thomson and Mary Neill Hagood edged Minnesota's Andrea Rose and Kelly Perry, 9-8 (4) and then advanced to the flight three final as they defeated Georgia Tech's Catherine Gunn and Laura Ozolins, 8-6. Shellie Cochran and McCall Holman defeated another Minnesota squad in Cici Anderson and Jennifer Howard, 8-2.
