GREENVILLE, S.C.-- The Furman women's tennis team avenged last year's 4-3 loss to N.C. State by defeating the Wolfpack 6-1 at Mickel Tennis Center on Saturday. The win moves Furman to 3-1 on the season and drops N.C. State to 2-2.

The Lady Paladins opened the day by taking two of three doubles matches, thus earning the doubles point. After Furman's Gene Holman and Mary Neill Hagood defeated Loni Worsley and Danielle Stadelman 8-4 at No. 3, the Lady Paladins claimed the first point of the match when freshmen Mary Neill Hagood and Mary Kovarik emerged with an 8-5 triumph at No. 2 against N.C. State's Jennifer Jassawalla and Myrna Bawono.

Furman then carried the momentum into singles play as the Lady Paladins took five of six singles matches. While Megan Dunigan shut out Katrina Gildemeister 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1, Holman defeated N.C. State's Worsley at No. 3, 6-0, 6-2. Furman's Kovarik then clinched the match when she earned a 6-3, 6-0 triumph against Kristin Nicholls at No. 2 singles.

Hagood and Natalie The also emerged victorious for the Lady Paladins, while N.C. State's lone point on the day came with a 7-5, 6-4 Jassawalla victory over Bentley at No. 6 singles.

The Lady Paladins will return to action on February 16th at 12:00 p.m. when Furman hosts in-state rival Clemson at Mickel Tennis Center.
